Ingredients

  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 1 ounce lemon juice
  • ½ ounce simple syrup (see note)
  • 1 ounce fruity red wine (eg. malbec or syrah)
  • lemon zest (optional)

Instructions

  • Fill an old fashioned or rocks glass with ice. Set aside.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour 2 ounces bourbon, 1 ounce lemon juice, and ½ ounce simple syrup into the shaker and shake vigorously for 15 seconds.
  • Strain the cocktail into the prepared glass. Very slowly and carefully pour 1 ounce fruity red wine over the back of a spoon onto the top of the cocktail. It should float on top. Garnish with lemon zest if desired.

Notes

To make simple syrup, dissolve sugar in an equal amount of hot water (eg. ½ cup sugar in ½ cup water). Cool completely before using in cocktails. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge. Make as little or as much as you want for future use.
