Three Cheese Toast
Three Cheese Toast is full of flavor from 3 different cheeses. Once the cheese spread is made, keep it in the fridge to make easy toast any time!
When I was a kid, one of my favorite snacks was a couple of slices of cheese melted onto bread. Kind of like an open-faced grilled cheese sandwich. Mr. Dreamboat reports that he snacked on the same, but in larger quantities.
As a growing teen, he would lay many slices of bread out on a baking sheet, top them all with cheese, bake them, and eat them all as an after-school snack. Hearing this made me dread the grocery bills that I might face in the next 3-8-ish years as my kids continue to grow.
But kids being hungry after school does seem to be a common theme, and it helps to have something easy, filling, and tasty for them to grab when they get home. Even better if it’s something they can make for themselves, which is definitely the case with this Three Cheese Toast.
This version is an upgrade from the plain sliced cheese I used to eat as a kid. It involves blending three different cheeses with butter and a few other seasonings to make a cheesy spread that you simply smear onto toast and broil for a quick and easy snack that’s both comforting and restaurant-worthy. Keep reading to learn how to make it.

How to Make Three Cheese Toast
Making this comforting snack starts with making the cheese spread. Once the cheese spread is made, you can use it to make up to 10 slices of cheese toast.
Add the butter, shredded cheeses, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce to the bowl of a food processor. Process until you have a uniform spread. You can use this spread right away, or transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the fridge until needed. Note that it will firm up in the fridge and become more difficult to spread. This can be resolved by softening just the portion that you need on your bread under the broiler for just a few seconds before spreading it over your toast.

When you’re ready to make cheese toast, take out as many slices of bread as you want. Each batch of cheese spread makes up to 10 slices of cheese toast. Toast the bread until it’s golden brown on both sides. It’s easiest to do this using a toaster oven that also has a broiler function, but using a regular toaster, and/or just your oven’s broiler will work too.
Spread about 2 Tablespoons of the cheese spread onto each slice of bread, making sure to spread it evenly all the way to the edges. Place the bread under the broiler and broil until the cheese is bubbling and beginning to brown. Make sure to watch it carefully – anything left under the broiler can begin to burn within only seconds.
Remove the bread from the broiler, and cut into fingers, if desired. Serve immediately.
Store any leftover cheese spread in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Three Cheese Toast Ingredients
- Softened butter – feel free to use either salted or unsalted butter here.
- Shredded aged cheddar cheese – Aged, old, or sharp cheddar cheese will give you the most flavor, but any cheddar will do. Also, feel free to use either white or orange cheddar (though you’ll want to use orange cheddar if you want your cheese toast to be orange.)
- Shredded Parmesan cheese – Make sure to use real Parmesan here, preferably one that you shred yourself. Pre-shredded cheese contains anti-caking agents (often some type of starch) that aren’t great for melting. Alternatively, you can use Asiago, Grana Padano, or other hard, flavorful cheese. Absolutely avoid Parmesan from a plastic shaker.
- Shredded Swiss cheese – or use Provolone or Gouda. Use the same guidelines as above – buy cheese in a block if possible, and shred it yourself for the best melting texture.
- Garlic – If you don’t have fresh garlic, you can substitute garlic powder (use â…› teaspoon per clove)
- Worcestershire sauce – If you don’t have it, simply omit it. Note that Worcestershire sauce may not be gluten-free. Make sure to check the label if you plan to serve this to someone who follows a gluten-free diet. Omit it if you’re not sure.
- Hot sauce – I used something like Frank’s Red Hot, which I usually have on hand, but you could use a few drops of Tabasco instead.
- Bread – The type of bread you choose can drastically affect your cheese toast. If you need it to be gluten-free, you’ll want to use your favorite gluten-free bread. I used a soft, thick-cut sandwich bread (Texas Toast) to maximize the comfort food factor. You could also use a crusty sourdough if you want your cheese toast to be on the crunchy side.

Ingredients
Instructions
- Add 1/2 cup softened butter, 1/3 cup shredded aged cheddar cheese, 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese , 1/4 cup shredded Swiss cheese, 1 small clove garlic, 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce to the bowl of a food processor. Pulse in the food processor until well mixed.
- Note: you can make as little as one slice of cheese toast at a time, or as many as 10 slices at once (or the maximum that will fit into your toaster/oven). Toast bread until golden brown on both sides (it's easiest to use a toaster oven with a broiler function, but if you don't have one, you can toast the bread in a regular pop-up toaster. Alternatively, use your oven's broiler to toast the bread – just make sure to watch it carefully, and don't forget to toast both sides).
- Turn the broiler on high and set an oven rack at the top. Top each slice of bread with 2 Tablespoons of the cheese spread, and without crushing the toast, spread it evenly over the top of the bread. (See notes below if you're using cheese spread that's cold from the fridge).
- Place the bread on a wire rack that is set on a baking sheet, and place the baking sheet on the top rack under the broiler. Watch the bread carefully while it's under the broiler. Broil until the cheese is bubbling and starting to brown. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and transfer the cheese toast to a plate. Cut into Fingers for easier sharing if desired. Serve immediately.
- Store any leftover cheese spread in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.
