Sometimes you need a dessert that mixes up in only minutes, doesn’t need to be cooked, and can be ready to eat in under an hour. Ambrosia is just that dessert.

What is Ambrosia?

If you’ve never had (or heard of) ambrosia, you’re probably not alone. It’s an American fruit “salad” that typically contains canned fruit, marshmallows, coconut, and often Cool Whip or other whipped topping. The flavors or fruits it contains can vary.

While I absolutely don’t consider it to be a salad, I do consider it to be a delicious dessert. I’ve previously made a cherry version, but this time I wanted to make Orange Dream Ambrosia to honor one of my favorite summer flavors – Orange Creamsicles.

How to Make Orange Dream Ambrosia

Making this ambrosia is so easy, anyone can do it! That makes this a great recipe to try with small children, who will enjoy dumping the ingredients into a mixing bowl and stirring them together.

And that is all that is required to make this recipe – simply add all of the ingredients (remember, there are only 4 of them) to a large mixing bowl, and stir them together.

Cover the bowl (use a lid, a plate, or plastic wrap) and set the bowl aside in the fridge for 30 minutes, or up to overnight. This will allow time for the juices and yogurt to soften the marshmallows, giving them a pudding-like texture.

When it’s time to serve your ambrosia, give it another stir before dividing it into small bowls or serving dishes. You can get creative here if you want it to be fancy, and try serving it in short cocktail glasses or champagne coupes.

If desired, garnish your ambrosia with additional shredded coconut and maybe an additional segment or two of mandarin orange.

Note that the ambrosia is best if eaten within 1 day, but will last up to 3 days in the fridge. Make sure to stir before serving.

Orange Dream Ambrosia Ingredients

The ingredient list to make this sweet, tropical dessert is short – only 4 easily accessible ingredients are required.

  • Mini marshmallows – make sure to check the size of your bag of mini marshmallows. This recipe is based on a 14-ounce bag of marshmallows, which is commonly available at the time of writing, but package sizes are prone to change due to shrinkflation.
  • Canned mandarin orange segments – you will need 4 small cans (284mL each) or a total of 1136mL (36oz). You will be draining them, so it doesn’t really matter if they’re canned in syrup or juice. Find canned mandarin orange segments in the aisle with other canned fruit.
  • Vanilla Greek yogurt – any milkfat percentage will work, but I recommend 2% or higher for a creamier result
  • Sweetened shredded coconut – you could also use unsweetened coconut for a less sweet result. Find this in the baking aisle of any grocery store.
