Easy Copycat Deep ‘n Delicious Cake Frosting
This Easy Copycat Deep ‘n Delicious Cake Frosting is smooth and chocolaty – a semi-homemade version of every Canadian’s favorite frozen cake.
If you’re thinking this recipe looks a little familiar, it’s probably because I already posted a recipe for a Copycat Deep ‘n Delicious Cake. Or an almost copycat recipe, at least. The prior recipe included a made-from-scratch French silk frosting that is a bit of a project to make.
While that cake is pretty darn good, it doesn’t quite replicate that familiar smooth-as-butter, fudgy chocolate frosting that every Canadian’s favorite frozen cake is so famous for. But recently, I accidentally came across a much easier, kinda homemade frosting that’s even closer.
A few months ago, it was my daughter’s birthday. She wanted (or more accurately, I wanted her to have) two birthday cakes – one for her actual birthday, and one for her birthday party, which was happening a few days later.
The only problem was that her actual birthday was on a busy weeknight. She wanted a specific store-bought cake for her party, and I didn’t want to have to buy two cakes, so I made plans to make an easy homemade chocolate cake (wacky cake, which is my easy cake solution for all situations) that included a few store-bought shortcuts. I bought a tub of chocolate frosting and a tub of marshmallow fluff.
I had used store-bought marshmallow fluff to make a shortcut Swiss Meringue Buttercream in the past, and I wanted to do something similar. The problem was that I made a big measuring mistake and added far too much marshmallow fluff. The frosting came out not like Swiss Meringue Buttercream at all, but smooth, chocolatey, and a little sticky. It tasted very familiar.
I quickly realized that it reminded me very much of Deep ‘n Delicious Cake frosting, and while it wasn’t what I was going for, it was still good. I didn’t have extra ingredients to start over anyway, so I went with it. While the frosting absolutely did not work as a cake filling (the top layer kept sliding off of the bottom one), it was delicious, and everyone loved it. I made a mental note to make the cake again with a few tweaks to the frosting (and in a single layer). This Easy Copycat Deep ‘n Delicious Cake Frosting is the result that I ended up with.

How to Make Easy Copycat Deep ‘n Delicious Cake Frosting
Since this frosting is so quick and easy to make, you’ll want to make sure you already have a cooled chocolate cake ready to go before you start mixing it up. While I’m not including a recipe with this post, you can certainly use my Easy Chocolate Wacky Cake recipe (I always do). Or if you already have a favorite chocolate cake recipe, use that one. Of course, boxed cake mix is always an option too.
This frosting recipe will cover one 9×13″ cake or two 8×8″ cakes (you could eat one now and put one in the freezer for later). Don’t use it as a cake filling/between the layers of a layer cake.

To make the frosting, add the store-bought chocolate frosting, softened butter, and cocoa to the bowl of your stand mixer (or a large bowl). Beat on high speed until the frosting becomes fluffy and slightly lighter in color than it started.
Add the marshmallow fluff to the bowl and beat again. If you’re using a hand mixer, make sure you have a firm grip on both the bowl and the mixer, as the frosting will become stiff and a little sticky. When the frosting is smooth, fluffy, and glossy, it’s done.
At this point, you’re ready to frost your cake. If you really want to go for the full Deep ‘n Delicous vibe, you can fit a star tip onto a piping bag and pipe stars all over the surface of the cake.
If you want easy mode (like I did), simply use an offset spatula to spread the frosting all over the top of your cake(s). Then use a flat spatula to gently dab onto the surface of the frosting and quickly pull straight up to create spiky frosting peaks all over the top of the cake. Finish your decorating with chocolate sprinkles or grated dark chocolate (if you want).

Easy Copycat Deep ‘n Delicious Cake Frosting Ingredients
- Store-bought chocolate frosting – I used Betty Crocker Creamy Deluxe. I recommend using a “creamy” type frosting, not a “whipped” one. You will need a whole can for this recipe. You can find store-bought frosting in the baking aisle near the boxed cake mixes.
- Softened unsalted butter – adding a little extra butter to the frosting helps to make it extra smooth and fluffy.
- Cocoa powder – I added a little extra cocoa powder to my frosting to make sure it was nice and chocolatey after adding the marshmallow fluff.
- Marshmallow creme – aka marshmallow fluff. This is the secret ingredient for this frosting. It makes it smooth, giving it a texture similar to the unique frosting on the famous Deep ‘n Delicious cake. Find it in a plastic tub in the baking aisle near the marshmallows, or make it yourself.
- One  9×13″ chocolate cake or two 8×8″ chocolate cakes. I used a 9×13″ cake made with a double recipe of my chocolate wacky cake. You could also use your favorite boxed cake mix (or gluten-free boxed cake mix if needed).
- Chocolate sprinkles or grated chocolate – this is optional and used for sprinkling on top of the frosted cake.

Instructions
- Add 450 grams (16 oz) store-bought chocolate frosting, 60 grams (4 Tablespoons) softened unsalted butter, and 10 grams (2 Tablespoons) cocoa powder to the bowl of your stand mixer (or a large bowl). Mix on high speed until the mixture is light and fluffy.
- Add 150 grams (1 ¼ cups) marshmallow creme to the bowl with the frosting. Mix again at high speed until the mixture is smooth, glossy, and fluffy. Note that if you're using a hand mixer, the frosting will become somewhat stiff and sticky, so make sure you have a firm grip on the bowl and the mixer.
- Use the frosting to top one 9×13" cake or two 8×8" cakes. You can pipe the frosting on with a star tip so that it closely resembles a Deep 'n Delicious Cake, or spread it on with an offset spatula (or regular spatula). Once the frosting is spread all over the cake, you can use a spatula to pat the frosting and pull straight up to create little spiky peaks all over the frosting for a more low-effort decorating technique. Top with chocolate sprinkles if desired.
